We’ve still got a while before Thor: Ragnarok is released later this year but that hasn’t stopped fans from getting excited and speculating on what we might be in store for. The character was noticeably absent during last year’s big Marvel blockbuster, Captain America: Civil War, but he’ll be returning in 2017 along with another missing Avenger, the Incredible Hulk. Given how funny of the videos of Thor’s time off have been, Ragnarok (despite its apocalyptic title) is expected to be a much lighter, and more fun, affair than some of the more dour movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
There are reports that Thor: Ragnarok will also pull a few ideas from the Planet Hulk storyline of the comics and pit the god of thunder and the jolly green giant against each other in gladiatorial combat. We’ve seen plenty of concept art and teasers of the Hulk’s Roman-inspired armour and the latest art of the two heroes fighting with battle axe against hammer is exciting, to say the least. We can’t wait to see the two muscled supermen square off.
Despite being one of the most popular characters in the Marvel universe Thor hardly gets his due. He has actually only gotten his own video game on three separate occasions and one was the poorly received Thor: God of Thunder back in 2011. The reviews were terrible and the title could be one of the main reasons we haven’t seen many other Thor games since. Another game was an iOS title released the same year, Thor: Son of Asgard, and its reviews were almost as bad as God of Thunders. Both of those games were so awful you could argue that the licensed slot reel based on the original Marvel movie is the best Thor game out there today. The online slot brought many of the characters to the gaming world as well as some of the legendary weapons, ultimately comprising a fun, comic book take on a classic casino game. It’s one of many themed games highlighted for prominent casino sites that bank on the popularity of major Marvel characters, movies
, TV shows, and more. But regardless of the character’s bumpy road when it comes to video games, Marvel shouldn’t give up on the character just yet.
There’s still a chance for Marvel to get things right for the Norse god, and Ragnarok could represent the best opportunity. With the emphasis on one-on-one combat, a simple brawler for mobile devices could be a huge hit with fans. Developers could make it a two character game with the option to play as either Thor or Hulk in order to provide additional gameplay variety beyond a typical button-masher. Also, given the awesome armour, we’ve seen Hulk teased with, maybe the ability to earn more gladiatorial armour as the player progresses could provide some additional replay value to the mix. This is a movie bursting with gaming potential and the question becomes whether or not Marvel will recognise it.
There’s still plenty of time for rumours to abound and with nine months to go anything is possible. We’re looking forward to getting a proper trailer with some shots of the action soon. As fun as the peeks at Thor’s vacation have been, they don’t reveal much for what’s actually going to go down. Thor: Ragnarok is scheduled to hit theatres November 3, 2017.
